vaticannews.va - 2026-02-20 - The General Secretariat of the Synod has created a new body dedicated to developing proposals for the revision of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches (CCEO) in the context of the synodal journey. Called the Eastern Canonical Commission, it met for the first time on February 20 at the General Secretariat of the Synod’s headquarters. This new Commission builds on the work of the Canonical Commission that had been formed in December 2023. That commission had already put some proposals forward for a reform of the CCEO, though its main focus was on the Latin Church’s Canon Law. The 2026 Eastern Canonical Commission is also responding to a number of requests made by leaders of the sui iuris Churches. These are the 24 individual autonomous Churches within the Catholic Catholic Church that are in full communion with the Pope but maintain their own specific traditions, liturgies, laws, and governance. Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist
The angel said, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God." (Luke 1:13-16)
