Iraqi bishops: mixed feelings as US troops begin withdrawal
Tuesday, 30 June 2009 11:17
CWNews.com - As American troops take the first steps in a long withdrawal process, Church leaders in Iraq are hopeful but worried. Archbishop Louis Sako of Kirkuk told the AsiaNews service that his people have "little confidence," and stresses the need for the Iraqi government to assert effective control, ending attacks against the Christian minority. Bishop Shlemon Warduni, a Baghdad auxiliary, concedes that there is fear in the nation's capital as well, but says there is also great hope "for a new era of national reconciliation and cooperation for the good of the entire country, not only personal interests."

Wisdom from the Church Fathers
Souls that love truth and God, that long with much hope and faith to put on Christ completely, do not need so much to be put in remembrance by others, nor do they endure, even for a while, to be deprived of the heavenly desire and of passionate affection to the Lord; but being wholly and entirely nailed to the cross of Christ, they perceive in themselves day by day a sense of spiritual advance towards the spiritual Bridegroom.
