Statement on Eastern Europe

Joint Committee of Orthodox and Catholic Bishops, 1991

With gratitude to God we welcome the disintegration of communism in Eastern Europe and particularly in the Soviet Union. where Christian people, the majority of whom are Orthodox, but not exclusively so, have suffered relentless religious persecution and oppression for the past 74 years. We gratefully recognize the fact that the Christian Church has nevertheless survived this persecution. Unfortunately, attempts to restore democracy have also given rise to types of proselytizing that do not respect the nature of the cultures and do not accept the historical Christianity already present there. This Christianity is in need of the moral support and material help of Christian people throughput the world.

Nativity of the Mother of God

Your nativity, O Virgin Mother of God, heralded joy to the universe; for from you rose the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. He redeemed us from the curse, He gave the blessing, and by trampling Death, He gave us everlasting life.
